Pulau Ubin, Singapore

"I took the road less traveled by, And that has made all the difference" - Robert Frost

This was one of those let's-get-out-of-the-city-and-unwind type of adventure. Me and my friends planned this a month before but you know how it is with plans and friends - somebody's bound to chuck out the last minute and try to change plans. It took a lot of browbeating and stubbornness on my part for this to come through. I mean, I seldom feel the need to be aggressive on trivial things but when I do, I give it all I've got. And my heart is firmly set on this trip.

I was determined to do something different and that was what we got because at just 10 mins. away from mainland Singapore, we took a glimpse of the island state 40-something years ago.

The island is so small and the only type of transportation available are those really old owner-type jeep or you can simply rent a bike. Well, we opt for the latter (I discreetly managed to convince everyone to commune with nature. he he he... ). Up and down, we pedaled our way through the sometimes rough terrains sweating away a year (or make that 2) of accumulated fats just to take a look at what the island has to offer.

If I have to describe the island, I should say that it is far removed from modern Singapore with its undeveloped surroundings. But it is also in its simplicity where its distinct appeal lies.

All in all , the whole experience was a bit different than what we would normally do on a rest day. And even when I have to go home that day exhausted and almost dehydrated, I'd still say that the the trip back in time reminded me something that perfect, modern, efficient Singapore never could. There's nothing like going without to make us appreciate the simple and finer things in life. On that day, I took the road less traveled by - and it definitely made a difference.

My friends were another matter though - they were so exhausted, they vowed never to let me talk them into another adventure. Uh ooh.... Wanna bet? he he he....
